How Cold Helps Fat Loss

Not all fat is equal. There is belly fat, thigh and buttock fat and visceral fat around the organs, essentially white fat and brown fat.

Brown fat is the kind you want more of!  It helps burn the stored calories trapped in our excess white body fat.  Brown fat is typically found in the neck, chest, and back. It is greater in infants and the quantity of brown fat significantly decreases as we age. Adults who have more brown fat tend to look and feel younger, more slender and have normal blood sugar levels.

Brown fat is more like muscle tissue containing blood vessels and mitochondria which is why you can generate brown fat by exercising. Exercise converts white fat to a more metabolically active brown fat. Getting enough high-quality sleep activates melatonin production which influences the production of brown fat. Exposing yourself to the cold regularly also actives brown fat.

White fat, on the other hand, is the fat around the belly, thighs, buttocks, and deep around the organs in the gut. It is less mitochondrially active and stores energy and provides thermoregulation. Excess white fat can be attributed to heart disease, various cancers and diabetes.

Maybe you remember a little story a few years back about how Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps was known to eat 12,000 calories per day. Yes, he was in training, but he would need to swim continuously for 10 hours every single day to burn off that many calories. Michael Phelps did spend 3-4 hours a day in the water, which more thermally conductive than air. His body was burning all those calories just to stay warm.

You can also use cryotherapy to give your body a similar boost to activate brown fat to burn off excess white fat.

Cryotherapy booths have gained popularity and will bring down that body temperature but memberships can be pricey. Some folks may choose ice baths or super cold showers as a cheaper option. Folks looking for an alternative to liposuction may have looked into Coolsculpting and Cryosculpting to target pockets of stubborn fat resistant to diet and exercise. Those can also be quite pricey when you consider that you likely have more than one body area you want to treat. Often you have issues with your belly and thighs and upper arms and double chin.

That is why I’m so happy to now be offering Puresculpt treatments in the studio.
